The third event of the series was co-chaired and co-organized by the Institute for Computational Design and Construction, University of Stuttgart and The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. FABRICATE 2017 took place in the Institute for Computational Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart last April.
The University of Stuttgart is renowned for creatively engaging the rigour and insights of manufacturing and engineering science in architectural design. Stuttgart is situated within the heartland of technological innovation and advanced manufacturing in Germany and the south of Germany is home to a large number of world-leading fabricators in the building sector. This made a perfect home for FABRICATE 2017, attracting over 520 attendees and over 250 high-quality project submissions. FABRICATE 2017 included Industry Talks from leading fabrication companies which significantly contributed to the discussion at the event.
FABRICATE 2017 disseminated selected work alongside a series of thematic essays by world leading architects and engineers. The four conference sessions were titled ‘Rethinking Production Futures’, ‘Rethinking Materialisation’, ‘Rethinking Additive Strategies’ and ‘Rethinking Constructional Logics’. Reviewed by an international panel of experts, projects presented at the conference were selected through our Call for Work.

Conference co-ChairFABRICATE 2017 ‘Rethinking Design & Construction’ was edited by Achim Menges, Bob Sheil, Ruairi Glynn and Marilena Skavara and published by UCL Press on Open Access. It was launched in Stuttgart, at FABRICATE 2017, complementing the conference and was distributed to all delegates as part of their registration. It was released in electronic format free for everyone to download at the same time.
It features the works of all our selected speakers as well as a further selection of 16 projects from the peer-reviewed Call for Works. The publication also includes 4 discussions between Jenny Sabin and Mario Carpo, Monica Ponce de Leon, Virginia San Fratelo and Ronald Rael, Carl Bass and Achim Menges and lastly, Anoine Picon and Bob Sheil.
